Red Devil’s Food Cake    Aunt Isabel
2 cups sugar
3/4 cup shortening (or 1/2 cup butter)
2 eggs
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 & 1/2 cups sifted flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
½ cup cocoa (unsifted)
1 cup boiling water
Combine flour, baking soda, salt and cocoa. Set aside. Cream shortening (or
butter) with sugar. Add eggs one at a time. Mix well.
Add vanilla to buttermilk. Add alternately with dry ingredients to the
creamed mixture. When well mixed, add boiling water all at once and stir
well. Batter will be thin.
Bake: 13x9-inch pan 325 degrees 55-60 minutes
2 - 8-inch pans 350 degrees 40 minutes
