Molasses Cookies Tom & Kari

3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar (plus additional sugar for rolling dough balls in)
1/4 cup light molasses
1 egg
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 teaspoon ground cloves (optional)

In saucepan, melt shortening over low heat. Allow to cool. Add sugar, molasses and egg; beat well. Sift flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves and salt. Add to mixture.
Mix well and chill. Roll into l-inch balls and then roll balls in granulated sugar. Bake in a 375-degree oven for 8-10 minutes.
